The Migration Weekly Ep.03: The Week Of Attempts
This past week on The Migration has been a CRAZY! It all started with Claire attempting features on a mountain bike trail we rode last June that she didn’t even consider possible at the time. Then I attempted to summit Mount Bachelor for the first time on snowshoes and ski back down. To top things off, Spoke and I head deep into the woods down a dirt road and cook an Outdoors Boys inspired dinner. Check out the video below to see how it all turned out! It was an absolute blast of a week and going to be a great video!
Mountain Biking:
This trail is pure fun! Or maybe FUNNER? A true Bend classic. I didn’t lie in the video! If you visit Bend and ride bikes, this must be on your list! Full of chunky goodness and some fun rock rolls and skinnies, you will not be disappointed with this ride. Not a steep or overly complicated ride either. Really the only downside is that sections of the trail are 2 way so you just have to keep that in mind. BUT, the last time we rode this in June 2025, Claire stuck to the blue trail and avoided nearly all of the technical goodness. This time, Claire conquered nearly everything and at minimum, gave the feature an attempt! So proud of her!
Mount Bachelor Summit Attempt:
Due to the extraordinarily small amount of snowfall this year, the summit of Mount Bachelor was only open 3 days this season. It is important to note that Mount Bachelor has made it very easy for complete novices to mountain climbing, such as myself, to hike your way to the summit via a marked route. This is the perfect entry experience to touring if you lack the proper knowledge to travel the backcountry safely but get a great training day in. The funny story not in the video though… I actually intended to attempt this the day prior. But after arriving, getting kitted up, ad beginning the walk I felt like something was off. That was when I realized I was still wearing my vans and forgot my snowshoes and hiking boots back at the house! Darn… So that day’s attempt was scratched, and I gave it my real attempt the next day which was also the very last day the resort was open. Unfortunately, I got a later start to the day after having to take care of some other things needing done and as I was approaching the summit got turned around by Ski Patrol due to them closing the route. Me and 2 other dudes I met along the way. I spoke with an individual at the front desk before starting and was told the route was open so long as the summit lift was running. Due to it being their largest festival they host, I saw a schedule that said lifts were running until 7pm. So based on that, I assumed I had more than ample time to reach the top and in turn took my time to enjoy the hike. Unfortunately, I was wrong… Oh well! Goal for next year now (and maybe with proper back country gear)!
Outdoors Boys Style Dinner:
Bread- If you are unsure who the Outdoors Boys are, go check out their YouTube channel here. But in short, he cooks some amazing back country meals and his bread has become famous. So of course, I needed to see how good it really is and well it is amazing! For complete details on making it go check out the recipe here. But for as far as the basics go here they are:
2 cups flour
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
3/4 cup warm water
Let rise through the day or overnight before cooking. Be sure to butter the pan well before dumping the dough onto the pan.
Fondu- If you want to make the fond, pour no more than ¼ cup (I used closer to a 1/3 cup on accident and it was way to much) of one of the following: white wine or apple cider. bring to boil then slowly start adding grated cheese into it and stirring constantly. It should be melted and think! My favorite cheese for this is the one in the gallery below.
Steak- Of course to round out the meal, you need a solid steak. Firs season it with theKinder’s Wood Fired Garlic Ruband generously apply to both slides. I like to get the cast iron nice and hot and then flip the steak frequently and early. Once its slightly under the level of cooked I want it, I crank up the heat to give it a nice crust without over cooking. Be sure to add butter to cast iron prior to placing steak for a nice flavor boost. I do not enjoy spooning butter over it though. Keep it mild.

This past week on The Migration has been a BLAST! We hiked one of the most beautiful waterfall hikes I have ever seen, conquered new bouldering sets we found, and got back on one of the local’s favorite mountain bike trails! And, of course, we had to do another cold plunge for redemption! With Spring weather arriving and snow melting, adventures that have been hidden beneath the snow are returning.
